WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE?
On the back of the success of David Attenborough’s ‘Planet Earth II’ and “Blue Planet II’, the world has never been so conscious about reducing waste and protecting the environment. Here at Peppermill Interiors, we see the importance of being sustainable and are huge believers in using what we already have. You just have to take a look at our vintage furniture collection to see that. But this year we have decided to try something new.
We have spoken before about
making the future more
sustainable, but what actually is
sustainable furniture?
Environmentally Friendly Furniture
The consumption of single use plastics is one of the biggest threats to our planet, with huge quantities ending up in landfills and our oceans. Environmentally friendly furniture helps to make sure that whatever man-made waste we produce has as little impact on the environment as possible.
The simple solution to this would be to ensure we don’t produce anything which could negatively impact the environment. However, this is something which takes time to implement and that’s when recycling already produced materials becomes so important.
Here at Peppermill
Interiors, we repurpose recycled plastic and waste steel into eco friendly chairs. We are a member of ReCircle Recycling, a
growing community of British businesses which are supporting Plastic Oceans UK as
part of the global incentive to clean up our oceans and educate people on the
importance of looking after the sea.
Plastic In Our Oceans
We produce 300 million tonnes of plastic a year; half of which we use just once, sometimes only for a few seconds (think plastic wrapping on sweets). Of that plastic, up to 12 million tonnes (4%) ends up in our seas. Animals typically ingest or get trapped in this plastic, often dying in the process.
As these plastics are broken down in our oceans, they turn into microplastics, which until recently have not been deemed deadly. These microplastics are toxins and are ingested by all manor of creatures in the oceans as they filter through the food chain. As humans at the top of the food chain the levels of toxins and microplastics in the food we eat from the oceans is increasing, putting our health in jeopardy. But by working with ReCircle Recycling, we hope to play our small part in raising awareness about our oceans and the use of plastics.
Eco Furniture
We have only just begun with our eco furniture and our stackable chairs and eco-friendly bar stools are the first of what we hope will be a long line of sustainable furniture offerings from Peppermill Interiors.
